10 Common Foods That are Harmful to Dogs

At PetHub your pet’s health and safety are our utmost priority. Sadly many dogs end up with unplanned vet visits every year when they get a hold of food their owners didn’t know was toxic to them. Before you hand Fido that berry, take a look at this list and make sure you don’t end up making your fur kid sick!

  1. Bread Dough. Raw bread expands in the stomach and can cause intestinal blockage that can lead to death.

  1. Xylitol (aka sugar free gum). Xylitol is lethal to pets and gum alone (much like bread dough) can cause intestinal blockage.

  1. Mushrooms. Mushrooms can cause a variety of problems ranging from stomach upset to seizures--depending on the kind of mushroom ingested.

  1. Raisins, currants and grapes. These have been associated with liver and kidney failure.

  1. Cooked bones. Despite popular belief, cooked bones are hazardous to dogs. They can cause choking, stomach bleeding and intestinal blockages.

  1. Fatty fried foods. The most common problem with fried food is upset stomach and diarrhea. However, regular consumption can lead to heart disease and diabetes.

  1. Moldy Foods. Not all molds will make your pup sick but it’s not worth taking the chance--especially since certain molds (that grow on food) can be lethal.

  1. Most nuts. Macadamia nuts are just as lethal chocolate. Other nut varieties such as cashews and walnuts aren’t as deadly as Macadamia nuts, but they can still make your pooch very ill.

  1. Avocados. Avocado skins and pits are just as poisonous as chocolate.

  1. Onions & garlic. Any variety from the garlic or onion family is lethal to dogs and most small animals. Consumption causes damage to the pet’s red blood cells and can ultimately lead to death.
