The gem will go through an "awakening" process, and will gain 5 slots in its vicinity. This means that players will be required to place five more legendary gems into these slots and upgrade each of them to rank 10.
Due to "awakening," a user does not require six but 36 (!) 5-star gems to fully max their power.
"To get a gem to awaken, the gem must be level 10 and you'll need to buy an item that's only accessible in the cash shop . It's purple orbs called dawning echos for around 1000 eternal orbs. That's 30 dollars per event of awakening." ShiftYourCarcass noted.
That's a total of up to $540,000 at an average of $15,000 each for a 5-star gem. Additionally players would have to pay around $180 for six dawning echoes.
It's true you "whales" with lesser luck will need to spend even more (let's say 1 million dollars?) as Diablo Immortal doesn't guarantee a 5-star gem drop.
Diablo Immortal has become the most controversial game launch of 2022 as of now. It's currently the lowest-rated Blizzard title on Metacritic by players who accuse the studio of milking money out of their fans. The game's monetization strategy was critiqued by some game creators (here is a post from Riot producer Juno Blees about predatory pay-to-win mechanics).
Despite the controversy, Diablo Immortal continues to bring in money for Blizzard. According to AppMagic the game earned $14.5 million on mobile during the first week, and its earnings now topping $40 million.
One question I've gotten repeatedly asked in the last few days which I've also asked myself in the present state of Blizzard and its Diablo 4, can we be sure that Diablo 4 will actually deliver in the wake of recent events?
